Setting Up A Home Office
You have made the decision to start a home based business. You have decided to take advantage of these opportunities and become an owner instead of an employee. This is terrific! You will now have the ability to spend more free time with your family, care for your infant instead of placing them in day care, and pursue those hobbies that you have only dreamed about.
Having a small home business will enable you to save money and time each day. Just think about that 2 hour commute you endure each day. This will disappear, giving you more time to enjoy your life. In addition, the money you save on fuel and repairs will quickly show in your chequebook.
The many opportunities that can be found online have enabled more people to fulfil the dream of business ownership. What is even more incredible is that most of these opportunities can be worked from the comfort of your home office.
If you have recently made the decision to become a home based business owner, it is crucial to your success to establish a home office. Creating a home work environment will help you stay focused on the tasks at hand, and lead to a sense of professionalism.
Why Is A Home Office So Important?
The most important reason to create a space for your home office is to ensure that you have a place to work without interruption. One of the hardest things to accomplish when you are a home based professional is distinguishing a time and place to work where friends and family will not bother you. Even though these loved ones have the best intentions, constant interruptions will decrease productivity and disrupt work flow.
Another reason that you should have a home office established is for organisation. You are a professional business, offering a professional product or service; you do not want to place your clients “on hold” as you search through the dining room table for the correct information. A home office will ensure that you become, and stay organised with your work.
What Should Be Placed In Your Home Office
While decorating tastes will vary, a minimalist approach is often the best approach to office decorations. Cluttered offices often lead to cluttered minds. Your basic essentials should include:
- Desk with drawers – Your desk should be large enough to keep your computer on it, with the monitor far enough away from you that the light does not cause eye strain. The desk should also be able to accommodate a phone and a space to work on paper work. Drawers are really handy to keep supplies available, but out of the way.
- Ergonomic chair – Having a food office chair will help you stay comfortable and fight fatigue. Make sure that when you purchase an adjustable chair that you adjust it to your body type. Ergonomic chairs will not provide any benefits if they are not adjusted properly.
- Computer with high speed Internet access – Most home based businesses are Internet based, creating a need for high speed access. You do not want to keep customers waiting for materials because it takes too long to download via dial-up.
- Fax machine – You may be able to use an Internet based fax service. However, having a fax machine is often faster than relying on these services.
- Good printer – You do not necessarily need colour, but you will need a quality black ink printer for your business documents.
- Telephone (land line or mobile) that is dedicated only to the business – Nothing can be more devastating to your business than to have an important client call and your toddler answers.
- Filing cabinet – This may not be necessary if you have file storage in your desk drawers.
- Trash receptacle
If it is possible, you should try to keep all personal items out of your office. Disruptions in your work flow can occur when people are continually entering and leaving your office to retrieve their personal belongings. Some home business owners have gone as far as to place work hours on their door so that family and friends know that during those periods the room is off limits.
